Welcome to Yellow Dog Racing and thanks for stopping by!
This is about the passion of speed and combining it with the classic mini car. This comes from my childhood dream of owning a fast mini.
In my teens my Mum had a little mini 850 wagon that I learned to drive in. I really wanted it to go faster, and somehow managed to get hold of a book from someone on how to tune it. I played around with the SU carburettor and managed to get a bit more performance out of it. I zoomed around the back roads of West Melton in Canterbury having a great time.
This mini is classed as a ‘Super Mini’ within the “Super Mini Challenge Race Series” sanctioned by Motorsport NZ. There are four classes of mini in this series, being:
1. Mini Sevens
2. Mini Miglia
3. Super Mini
4. Mini Open Class
The Super Mini vehicles have a slightly higher performance than the Miglia. Rick van Swet built the car, using the best developed components available at the time. You will find her details and specifications below. Rick raced it from 2009-2016 before selling it on. I happened to find it on Trade Me, and felt it would be a great starting out car.
Since purchasing, she has had a bit of a tidy up, with a new race seat, new harness and a full engine tune up and a few replacement components. There is more that I could do, but just one step at a time at the moment!
Firstly, I must thank my wife for not only allowing me to indulge in my various pursuits, but for her encouragement, her clever brain and quick wit that seem to lift me up but always keep me grounded.
Thanks also to the following people, who have not only provided exceptional service, but I feel have gone above and beyond in their kindness and willingness to make things easy for a person venturing into motor racing for the first time.
This time I felt like I was really racing! My times improved over the weekend, and I was really happy with how the car was running. The icing on the cake was a surprise win in the last race!
Some mischievous elves hitched a ride with Yellow Dog Racing and joined the Pokeno Santa Parade for some fun. Favourite comments from the kids watching – “This is the best day of my life!” and “That elf got runned over!”.…
UPDATE! My first racing event was a real blast. Had some ignition problems which meant I missed a few rounds but what I discovered was how amazing the camaraderie is with so many people willing to help me out.
The Mini Car Club of Auckland put together a great opportunity to bring mini car owners together to have a go at driving the Club Circuit Track at Hampton Downs. Joined by some of the members from Mini Racing Drivers…
